Now I’m sure you all are familiar with Detroit’s own Jermaine James aka JWil as a rapper phenomenon and revolutionary poet and speaker, but did you know that he was also the visionary behind Bellwether Fashion? Show and Tell Gospel sat down with JWil to get the scoop on Bellwether!
SATG: Why did you start Bellwether Fashion?
JW: Ok so there’s somewhat of a history behind why I started Bellwether. Some people know me from the Rap Duo Jay & Jay Soul but, before Jay & Jay Soul I started a clothing company back in maybe 2004/2005 called S.O.U.L. Clothing while I was in college at Oakland University. It stood for Servant Of U (You) Lord and I believe I may have actually printed up one style of shirt and sold a few to family and friends. However, being a college student I didn’t have the funds necessary to really run a business so I had to give that dream up.
Meanwhile I was starting my solo rap journey and a friend of mine, Jermaine (The other Jay from Jay & Jay Soul) was also a solo rapper. One day we were in the car on the way back from a youth conference I rapped at in Romulus and he was just like lets start a group and I was like ok what are we going to call it. He said Jay & Jay but, I wanted to name the group after my clothing co. “Soul”. So we ended up just combining the two and Jay & Jay Soul (Jermaine & Jermaine, Servants Of U Lord) was born.
I said all of that because most people who know me as a Rapper view Bellwether as a new venture but, really it’s me going back to what I started before I ever was known as a Rapper. So, I started Bellwether to complete what I started and go much further than I ever went in music.
SATG: What does Bellwether mean?
JW: The definition of Bellwether (paraphrased) refers to an influencer of trends or a leader. A wether is also a male sheep. There would be a bell placed around the neck of the male sheep leading the flock. That male leading the flock was called a Bellwether. The way I see it, if the other sheep were ever lost they could find their way back because they would hear the bell/ leader.
The brand is designed around those principles of leadership. Our logo, “The Chariot” was designed to speak that language of leadership. Our mission is to give people a brand that speaks volumes without being loud. We are careful not to be trendy because trends come and go, Bellwether is Forever.
SATG: What products do Bellwether Fashion offer and how much are they?
JW: Right now we carry hats and have just recently released our first t shirt. The goal is to have everything from shirts, jackets, and jeans by next summer. Our prices reflect the prices that our customers will see in major retail stores like Macy’s who carry brands in our category.
SATG: How can one purchase Bellwether Fashion?
JW: Right now our products are exclusively on our website at www.bellwetherfashion.bigcartel.com. We plan to be in retail stores by next year or maybe even sooner. We always encourage our supporters to ask store owners and managers for Bellwether. It’s kind of like planting a seed. We also set up at concerts and events around the Metro Detroit Area. We will be in Chicago for a huge conference in July.
SATG: Where will Bellwether Fashion be in the future?
JW: In the future we plan to be in every major retail store and in every mall in the world. Earth is our Target Market
Bellwether Fashion is Show and Tell Gospel Approved!

“I found strength in the midst of struggle” – Eddie Connor
Reflect back to when you were 15. Imagine the worse thing that could have happened to you at that time. For most of us it may be not making the Varsity team, getting a terrible grade or maybe even being broken up with but for Eddie Connor, it was learning that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL).

There is nothing better than seeing youth who really want to live for God!
G.I.F.T.E.D. (Godly Individuals Focused Towards Eternal Destiny) is the youth department of New Life in Christ Ministries where Pastor Gilbert and Co Pastor Carla Allen are the visionaries. In October of 2012, the vision of Keep Calm and Worship Conference was set on the heart of their youth department and on February 8, 2013 that vision came to pass! Four long months of hard work for their first youth conference and 100 youth registered, four souls were saved and 300 youth were in attendance for the Midnight Musical with Stellar nominee, Shana Wilson!
Now let’s fast forward to today….
Today is the first day of the Keep Calm and Worship II Retreat!!! Join G.I.F.T.E.D. at the Holiday Inn Conference Center for the entire weekend to be refreshed, renewed and regain the passion for worship! Registration is only $30 to experience all of what the retreat has to offer but all of the services and the midnight musical is FREE!!! Yes, we said FREE!
But here is what we didn’t tell you……..
Saturday at 3pm Cornelius Lindsey, Pastor of The Gathering Oasis in Atlanta, GA and his wife, Heather, Founder of Pinky Promise will be speaking for an hour then from 4-5 they will be doing a Q&A panel! Now here’s the catch, if you are not registered for the conference it is $5 to attend their session. Not bad to hear the Lindsey’s! I hope the Holiday Inn has enough room for the rush of Pinky Promise sisters that are going to bombard that place!
Want to know another surprise?
Saturday at 10 pm, BET’s Sunday’s Best winner Tasha Page-Lockhart will be ministering at the Midnight Musical!! The great part is that the musical is free!!
This is going to be a life changing weekend and we can’t thank G.F.T.E.D.Youth Ministries enough for planning this event! Kudos to Maria and her entire committee for planning such an awesome weekend!
P.S. Did we mention that Maria is only 24?! When asked why she lives for Christ, she simply said “to show the young girls at my church that holiness is possible” Now that’ll PREACH!!!
